The story goes that in 1976 a single branch on a Washington navel orange tree growing on Hacienda Cara Cara in Venezuela was noticed to be making fruit that was pink inside. The branch was a "sport," as it's called, a natural mutation. These sports happen relatively often on citrus trees compared to other types of fruit trees. They are so sweet and delicious!
